KIST (Kigali Institute of Science, Technology & Management)

This project seeks to introduce a comprehensive programme of ICT at the institutional level of KIST. The Computer Centre was established in 2020 and is responsible for the procurement, development and maintenance of information systems, taking care of the computer laboratories and the central electronics workshop at KIST. The computer centre also offers technical support to all departments.

In collaboration with the Department for International Development (DFID), KIST is running an intensive programme to train ICT Technicians to maintain hardware, software and networks. The programme aims to build local capacity to maintain the ICT infrastructure through staff upgrading. KIST has also introduced a CISCO Network Academy Programme and Microsoft Certification Programme. The institute aims to reform its curriculum to provide innovative, flexible, high-quality vocational education, applied research and technology programmes that will maximize opportunities for Rwandan communities. Through this alliance, KIST has become a Microsoft Certified Institute.

KIST is also working with World Links to support school Internet connectivity in rural schools. Twelve secondary schools have been identified for this programme. The programme seeks to provide technical solutions needed for the promotion of educational access to computers and the Internet including using a combination of new and refurbished technology, land-line, wireless and mobile telecentres. The computers at the regional centres will also be available for use by the local communities.

World Links Rwanda

World Links first began in Rwanda in July 2020. Since then teachers and headmasters in 13 schools throughout the country have been trained. In addition, two teachers from each school were trained in fundamental concepts, technologies, and skills needed to use computers and the Internet in the classroom. These teachers are now in the process of sharing their new knowledge and skills with another 520 teachers at their respective schools. World Links is now in the process of expanding their programme to an additional seven Rwandan schools.
