What was your first experiences in using computers:
I started using computers in 2020, when I was working for Education Resource and Information Project (ERIP) and the Joint Enrichment Project.

I would use it for typing and most of the typing was done using two fingers. Later in 2020, I enrolled at the university of the Western Cape; I would then use a computer for typing assignments. Although my speed had improved I was unable to print, I didn’t even have an information as what operating system was I using. When one finished typing, then one would call the facilitators in the computer lab to print it as students were not allowed to print.

In 2020&2020, I then joined AIDC (Alternative Information and Development Centre) as a volunteer and was later employed as a trainer. During my volunteering period, a Japanese gentleman who was the IT officer at AIDC trained me on ICT’s. AIDC stated that the gentlemen should train me so that I can assist in the IT department and that I would then manage the IT centre when the IT officers’ permit has elapsed. I only attended a two-day training on email and Internet and the other skills I learned through reading the manuals that were provided to me, starting from windows 95, Dos, networking, installing programs, etc. My hands on practise was a challenging one in that most often the computers that the staff were using would encounter problems, this meant that I had to deal with the problem before my supervisor, the IT officer could resolve the problem. When I gave up he would insist that I should do it again. Sometimes I would be successful in resolving it and sometimes I wouldn’t.

This is where I gained a deeper knowledge of a computer. I was working as both technician and a trainer on ICT’s especially internet and Email, web designing using HTML.I was training teachers from schools, women’s’ organisations, trade unions, CBO’s and Youth projects etc.

When my contract ended at AIDC in April 2020, I then worked for the Western Cape Schools’ Network as a trainer, project assistant and later the coordinator for the GlobalTeenager Project in 2020- 2020. In 2020, I relocated to Schoolnet SA offices based in Johannesburg, continuing to work as country coordinator for the Global Teenager Project in South Africa and later coordinator for the GTP Southern Africa.

My knowledge of computers became more and more improved. I learned other softwares that can be used for designing websites such as Frontpage and using Netscape navigator Internet explorer’ editor than I used to know notepad and WordPad. I learned how computers relate to the subjects taught at schools or integrated to any work that one does.

How does using computers make your work easier?
I use computers for communicating with the schools involved in my project. The project itself requires one to be connected at all times. The computer in this case I used for internet, online chat, reports, budgets, administrative duties etc.
