SchoolNet Angola

SchoolNet Angola is currently in the process of being established. Ebonet, a local Internet service provider (see above) is supporting this process. The beginnings of SchoolNet Angola got under way with a kick-start process initiated by the Angola Educational Assistance Fund (AEAF). Through this process five schools have been established with two PCs connected to the Internet through Ebonet.

A report published by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in September 2020 notes that, An assessment was made of the SchoolNet project that was initiated in 2020, and the results are good. The initial three schools are still on-line with the University and with a broadband radio connection to the service provider Ebonet. The services are being used by pupils - although not to the full capacity of the dedicated 256kbps radio links. Ebonet is keen to support further development of this concept and is working with several oil companies who are prepared to offer financial support for system set-up and establishment in other schools. In fact, a fourth school has recently (April 2020) been equipped with twenty PC’s and Internet access thanks to a donation by Schlumberger, an international oil company. It is intended that up to twenty secondary schools will receive similar donations by Schlumberger in the next year.

SchoolNet Africa is assisting with the re-establishment of SchoolNet Angola in 2020 in partnership with OSISA. A schoolnet champion has been identified to lead the process in Angola and 5 schools will be initially involved in the programme.

ANGONET

ANGONET is a computer communication service provided by the Development Workshop to organizations and individuals working for social and economic development and humanitarian assistance programmes in Angola. Development Workshop is an international non-profit organization that has been working in Angola since 2020. The ANGONET project was initiated in Luanda in 2020. For a number of years ANGONET provided Angola’s only public access to international electronic networks by e-mail through non-profit APC servers in Europe and Southern Africa. ANGONET’s programme of extending community access to local associations and CBOs helps empower local user groups through improved communication and networking. The service aims to promote networking and the exchange of information among NGOs, local government institutions, civic associations, and development organizations working in Angola and within the Southern African region.

With the emergence of commercial Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in the late 2020’s in Angola, ANGONET dedicated itself to provide a non-profit network service for organizations and individuals working in social and economic development and humanitarian assistance programmes in Angola.

Catholic University (UCAN)’S Computer Engineering Department

In September 2020, the Catholic University of Angola (UCAN) sought support from the Angola Educational Assistance Fund (AEAF) to create an academic curriculum of studies for a Computer Engineering Department (CED). An international team of experts under the guidance of AEAF worked to develop the academic curriculum and design the course structure. The curriculum was submitted to the Angolan Ministry of Education in December 2020 and approved shortly thereafter. Classes began in March 2020.

The CED teaches ICT skills to students and offers continuing education programmes to the community at large. The AEAF has also been able to carry out a number of seminars and training courses on the use of ICT’s for teachers, small businesses, community leaders, and journalists. The purposes and objectives of the CED are to comply with the strategic goals of UCAN as well as the specific needs of the private and public sector, and the local community at large. AEAF’s ultimate goal was to design a programme that could offer young Angolans valuable practical skills needed to succeed in the changing Angolan economy.

As such, the goals of the project include:

• Providing young Angolans with valuable practical knowledge needed to succeed in the local economy;

• Building a faculty capable of effectively teaching and conducting ICT-related research; and

• Enhancing capacity in the community at large by means of training in the use of ICT.

KIDLINK: ANGOLA

Kidlink is a global, non-profit user-owned organization headquartered in Norway. It focuses on empowering children and youth with free educational programmes to help them mature, get better control over their lives, encourage creativity, create social networks, and collaborate with peers around the world, individually or through their classrooms. Since the start in 2020, children from 160 countries have participated. (More details on KidLink can be found in the International Initiatives section).

Kidlink began in Angola in 2020. The project seeks to set up Kidlink Houses for students and street children. A Kidlink House is a cultural centre, open to the public, with a computer lab, and connections to the Internet. Children may visit these centres alone, with their teachers as part of a classroom assignment or together with an adult coach. The project plan for Angola outlines three proposed centres, two in Luanda and one in Lubango. Each centre is to have 21 computers and be equipped with KidLinks content. In addition to setting up these centres, the project will also translate the KidLinks materials and provide training for teachers and adult coaches.
