Computers Technology and Literacy in Secondary Schools Project

The directorate of Science and Technology Education (DSTE) is responsible for the promotion and teaching of science, mathematics and technology to all levels of the education system. The directorate also has the responsibility to advise on and coordinate some aspects of senior secondary and tertiary education programmes, facilities and resources, as well as environmental education. DSTE plays a leading role in the Computers in Schools Project.

The project began in 2020 with a pilot phase using 14 schools that were equipped with the necessary hardware, software, and Internet connectivity. Two teachers plus the Principal in each school were trained in basic word processing, spreadsheets, use of the Internet, pedagogical applications of the Internet and basic system maintenance. It is intended that these teachers will then train other teachers in their schools. A Computer Lab Attendant who is trained in basic system maintenance supervises the computer labs. The management of the computer labs rests with the schools and teachers.

The project has received financial assistance from the World Bank World-Links Programme and the UNDP Internet Project for Africa in the form of Lab construction or rehabilitation, computer equipment, Internet connectivity and training of resource teachers. Some of the costs are also borne by the schools, the government and the private sector. The Gambia Technical Training Institute has been involved training. NGOs, such as the Peace Corps and Voluntary Services Overseas, have provided personnel for the project. The Gambia Telecommunications Company (GAMTEL) has assisted with Internet connectivity for the schools.
